German Shepherds are wonderful companions and lifetime friends. German Shepherd puppies...
  • should be handled with care - especially their ears
  • should not be allowed to jump from heights higher than themselves or run on slick surfaces
  • should avoid interacting with dogs outside their home until 16 weeks of age
  • should enroll in puppy training classes by 6 months old
  • are curious! they should be crate trained so they have a safe and secure place to stay when unsupervised
  • should be fed high-quality food (avoid corn!) or a raw diet

German Shepherds ...
  • were standardized in Germany in the 1890s
  • were bred for herding
  • were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1911
  • are happiest when they have a job to do
  • are suitable for herding, police work, guiding the visually impaired, Schutzhund, ring sport, search and rescue, drug and bomb detection and tracking
  • are protective, energetic, intelligent, curious and agile
  • require regular brushing and vigorous exercise
